Remembering Former Bursar Alexander Černý

We were very saddened to hear that our colleague, RNDr. Alexander Černý, who gave more than 20 years of devoted work to TBU, passed away on Tuesday, 12 November 2024.

RNDr. Alexander Černý is known to the Zlín general public as a long-time Bursar and an important personality who contributed to the advancement of higher education in the Czech Republic, as well as to the extraordinary modern development of Zlín and our university.

Dr. Alexander Černý was involved in the construction of Tomas Bata University in Zlín even before its establishment. He became a member of the preparatory committee for the establishment of TBU, participated in the transformation of the property of the Brno University of Technology, the development of legislation and a number of other important activities related to the strategic vision of the new university. Throughout his term of office, he was involved in the construction of the university campus in the centre of Zlín, thus making a significant contribution to the development of the town itself.

During his time as Bursar, Dr. Alexander Černý also devoted himself to supporting and developing the university environment, contributing to the acquisition of funding for important projects, supporting innovation in research and education, establishing new faculties and developing the TBU’s degree programmes. It was also thanks to his initiative that the University has excelled from the outset in the use of information technology. This vision was later instrumental in the creation of the Faculty of Applied Informatics, which he helped to establish.

His main merit, however, lies in the gradual construction, expansion and modernisation of the infrastructure of our university. Thanks to his extraordinary efforts, many new and important buildings were constructed in Zlín during the 23 years of its existence. The most important of these is the University Centre, which, together with the Congress Centre, is one of Zlín’s modern architectural jewels. Dr. Alexander Černý also played a major role in the construction of the above-mentioned Faculty of Applied Informatics building in Jižní Svahy, the Laboratory Centre of the Faculty of Technology, the Educational Complex of the Faculty of Humanities in Štefánikova Street and the Faculty of Multimedia and Communication building.

He also actively participated in the establishment of research centres, namely the Centre of Polymer Systems, the ICT Technology Park and the Technology Park of the University Institute. Dr. Alexander Černý and his team also took care of the management, reconstruction and maintenance of all the university buildings, whether they were buildings used for teaching or university halls of residence, the refectory or the TBU nursery school. He also prepared the investment plan for the new building of the Faculty of Technology. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, he had to resign from the office of Bursar of TBU last year.

RNDr. Alexander Černý will be remembered with respect and gratitude as an extraordinary person who significantly contributed to the establishment and development of Tomas Bata University in Zlín and who has left an indelible mark on the modern history of the Zlín region.
